Jamie Carragher believes midfield is the weak point in Ruben Amorim‘s new Manchester United system.
Amorim took charge of the Red Devils in his first game as they steered the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town on Sunday, adopting a new 3-4-3 formation.
After watching the game, Carragher took the opportunity to analyse Amorim’s tactics, and believes midfield is the weak point of the side.
“I’ve heard a lot of managers, including Ruben Amorim, say that the system is not that important, but I believe it is, no matter how many times the manager has told me it is not, because why do you play a different system? Different systems offer different things in different areas,” Carragher told โปรโมชั่น ufabet Sports.
“For me the weak point is in those areas, the two midfielders. The reason is when you play a traditional back four, your wide players will pull inside. “
But because you play a back three, when they have the ball they naturally fall wide. The wing-backs will be deep and push up. That means there’s a lot of space in front of the two centre-midfielders, especially if the two number 10s don’t drop back. Same problem as the game against Ipswich.
“The big problem is, should a midfielder drop back to fill that gap or should one of the centre-backs push forward?”
“We listened to Ruben Amorim give an interview after the game and he talked a lot about Jonny Evans not pushing forward to fill that gap because they play in the same formation. It almost becomes a one-on-one game. Football has become like that.”
